Index Server

Asked By: Madeline    Date: Sep 22    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1438

We're trying to set up an Index server, due to some bad information we
received when setting up our SharePoint installation to begin with
(everything SharePoint related is on one box, the database is on
another). I'm looking to get some real world specsheets from you guys.

Currently, we have about 17k users with access to our Portal install,
and about 200k documents. We're planning to expand out that document
level to around 1M or so, in the future.

The index service is causing the Portal to not respond, as that, too,
was misconfigured...

Would definitely recommend adding a dedicated Index/Job server  to your farm so that you have a Medium farm configuration, make sure that it is set  to dedicated under resource usage and have a server with at least the minimum recommended hardware. It solved a lot of our indexing and search issues on a farm with 5 different portals and several standalone WSS sites. Somewhere around 20, 000 users  I believe. This link explains the different farm capacities.

Will a standalone Index Server has SQL Server along with it ?

If Im setting  up a standalone Index Server..what do I need on that box  ? Windows
2003 and..?

All you need on the Index server  itself is the Operating system and SharePoint.
It can use the same SQL server as the SharePoint web front end servers do.

Where is the index  file for the standalone index server  stored ? In the SQL
Server on the WFE ? If so, what is the purpose of clustering the Index Server or
having more than 1 Index Servers ?

Could you ring you sometime later in the evening if thats ok ?

The index  maintained by the index server  is actually stored in two halves. The
content is indexed and stored in a flat file on the Index server and query
server file systems themselves. The metadata of files is stored in a table in
the sharePoint SQL server. You can cluster the SQL server used by SharePoint,
but you can't cluster the Index server, nor can you have more than one index
server per Shared Service Provider in a Farm.
