index propagation to search server fails to commit ?

Asked By: Anish Jolad         Date: Jan 19, 2006      Category: Sharepoint      Views: 1834

Here's one that was new to me on SPS. I hope configuration/troubleshooting
questions are appropriate here. Has anyone seen the gatherer event log error:

"Index propagation to search server <node (IP)> failed to commit." ... (7060,
7077)

... on a medium farm, along with general inability to search?

The topology looks fine, and the nodes appear to see each other. There don't
seem to be any Microsoft KB articles on it. Any thoughts on troubleshooting?
This is a brand new portal. Bizarre to put up a brand new portal in a supported
topology and not be able to search.

The first thing that I would check is to see if the index  (gatherer) account is
at least a power user on the search  server. It needs that access to be able to
create the share and copy the index over to the search server.
Index may be created fine and look ok on the index server.
I would confirm that.
You could try manually copying the index to the appropriate location on the
search server  but I am not certain that a manual copy is acceptable and, even if
it works, is only a testing solution.
