Incorrect domain when user prompted to authenticate

Asked By: Cara    Date: Oct 02    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1815

Here's my predicament... Users are trying to access a SPS site over the Internet
and are prompted for credentials. If the user types in the wrong password their
user name and the incorrect domain are pre-populated by the web browser. I don't
want users to have to know or re-type the domain name.

For example a user is prompted and responds initially like this

User Name: MyUserName
Password: BADPassword

The user is prompted again, but this time like this

User Name: InternalDomain\MyUserName

The web server is configured to use basic and integrated authentication. The
problem does not occur when integrated is turned off; however this is a
SharePoint Portal site and I can't get indexing to work if integrated
authentication is turned off. Help!

Additional Configuration Details:
- For the sake of discussion the domain names in question are InternalDomain and

- The web server running SharePoint Portal Server is a member of ExternalDomain

- Most users are on an internal network and their computers are part of the

- The site they are connecting to is hosted externally and there is no trust
between the domains

- Users have accounts in both InternalDomain and ExternalDomain

Have you checked the Default Domain in IIS MMC?

Yes. The web  site's default domain  is set to "\" which should check all trusted
domains. The problem however seems to be client side. The browser  is picking
up the user's default domain which is not trusted by the web server.

Alternatively is there a way to make search work  without integrated  security, or
maybe is there a way to switch the authentication  order (i.e., user  basic before
