Importing Excel Sheet Data into SharePoint 2010 Custom List

Please excuse me, if you feel I am naive in this. I have a custom
share point (2010) list with data. I also have the custom list definition
for this list. Now, I created a list instance in a different application. I
managed to export all the data from the existing list into an excel sheet. I
am trying to import the excel data into the newly created list (same
schema), but couldn't find a way to do it. The only way I found was to
create a new list based on the excel sheet itself. But I don't want to do
this. I want to create the list using the list definition (which I could
accomplish) and import the data from the excel sheet. If I remember it
correctly, this was possible in 2007. Can anyone please help me and correct
my mistake?

Two options:

1) Under list settings in the source list, choose to export as a
template with data and create your new list from this export (rather
than Excel)

2) Create the new list from the list def, then cut and paste the
data from the excel sheet.

What if you save the first list as a template (keep the data) and then
upload that template to the new site collection and create a list with it?
