Question 1

We currently connect to our SPS as follows...

http://server/workspace

I would like to have the following...

http://server

redirect to the http://server/workspace location. What's the best
way to do this?

Question 2

Also several DNS aliases have been set up to the server. Currently
http://alias is the same as http://server and works. However

http://alias/workspace

Does not work and returns the following error

An unexpected error occurred.
An error occurred while accessing the dashboard. This error may be
caused by the proxy server settings for the dashboard. Contact your
server administrator. If you are a server administrator, configure
the proxy server settings by using the proxycfg utility. Consult the
product documentation and the readme for more information about
configuring the proxy server settings. Important: You must configure
the proxy server settings for the dashboard even if you are not using
a proxy server. (1)
Object or data matching the name, range, or selection criteria was
not found within the scope of this operation.

Ideally I would like

http://server and http://alias type URLs to work interchangabley.

Maybe I can share with you what I did with my SPS.
Just a little trick, but it's fine I think.

You can use frame.
And put your http://server/workspace in there.
Create this frame as default.asp at your default web site (IIS).

Here is the sample:
=============================
<html>
<head>
<title>..::Electronic Document Management System::..</title>

<FRAMESET ROWS="100%,*" frameborder="0" border="0" framespacing="0">
<FRAMESET COLS="100%,*" frameborder="0" border="0"
framespacing="0">
<FRAME NAME="front" SRC="http://Server/workspace" border=0
marginwidth=0 marginheight=0>
</FRAMESET>
</FRAMESET>

</head>

</html>

ANS 1. create a default asp with the following code
response.redirect "/workspace"
and in the "Internet information  Service", right click the
the "workspace" and open the "properties" window. In the "Workspace
properties" click on the "Documents" tab and select (enable) "Enable
Default Document" option if it is not enabled. Add the asp file with
the above code and see that it is at the "TOP". Make sure to put that
asp file in the root.
This will help.

ANS: IN the "web site properties" window, select "Web Site" tab. In
the "web site identification" select "Advanced".The "Advanced
Multiple web site configuration" window will open.Select the alias
and click on EDIT.In the "Host Header Name" add the name  by which you
want to access the web site. This will work. Also this host header
name should be used everywhere. Without the Host Header the Dashboard
will not work. I have learned this in a very tough way :).
Do this for each IP address.

msdn.microsoft.com/.../
dnmsipag/html/msi_pag_chapter6.asp

Configure Redirection to the Workspace
Redirection enables users to navigate to the corporate portal without having to
know the name  of the workspace. For example, if the server  is named CorpPortal
and the workspace is named Home, a user could then navigate to the site by
typing http://CorpPortal instead of http://CorpPortal/Home.

To configure redirection

On the taskbar, click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools,
and then click Internet Services Manager.
Expand the server node.
Right-click Default Web Site, and then click Properties.
Click the Home Directory tab.
In When connecting to this resource, the content should come from,
click A redirection to a URL.
In Redirect to, type  /workspace_name
In The client will be sent to:
Select the The exact URL entered above check box.
Select the A directory below this one check box.
Select the A permanent redirection for this resource check box.
Click OK.
