HTTP 404 error while accessing my WSS site

Asked By: Katie    Date: Apr 06    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 2873

I get the following messages periodically when navigating through my
Windows Sharepoint Site. Any idea what might be causing this. When it
occurs... my site is unavailable for a period of time before I can
access it again.

When I access the site through the server name example:

http://servername:port# I do not receive this message.

If I browse to the site through the DNS name example:

http://ebaTechnology.fg.rbc.com I get this error.

Are you using port 80 on the web site  properties?
I would check the account used as the identity of the application pool.
One time you see this message is when that identity does not have
sufficient rights.
There are many other times, but this is always the first place I check.

The account used as the identity of the app pool has "GOD" rights to everything and is being used by other web sites as well.
I am using port 80 as well.
Anything else that I should be looking at.
