HostHeader/URL for Site Collection

Asked By: Caitlin    Date: Apr 02    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1540

I have posted this question before but don't think i posted the
question correctly. We have a sharepoint site

I was asked if we can setup a separate URL for PPDemo so that people
who wants to go to PPDemo can go directly to PPDemo and not be re-
directed to sharepoint.com/sites/PPDemo.

Is this possible?

SharePoint does not natively support vanity URLS. You maybe could write an
httphandler to re-write the URL, or use ISA or something to re-write. there
could be issues with AAMs and alert URLs?

never tried it, however. if you make it work, let us know how.

We use a product from Helicon Tech that works pretty well. You can read
about it here:

I'm not sure if this will help or not, but another method you could
try is to use a host headered site  collection. Within SharePoint
itself you could create your site collection  using the createsite
stsadm command with the -hhurl switch. This will allow you to create
a new collection within an existing web application but give it its
own url  address. The site collection will only be addressable by the
host header name you use and not by its Web application URL, so if
this is an issue this might not work for you. I plan on doing a blog
post on this once I get back from vacation.

I don't know if you can have it accessible at
http://sharepoint.com/sites/PPDemo" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://sharepoint.com/sites/PPDemo AND http://PPDemo at the same time
out of the box. Maybe ISA can do it, maybe the other third party
suggested can do it. If you wanted to MOVE
http://sharepoint.com/sites/PPDemo" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://sharepoint.com/sites/PPDemo to http://PPDemo you could do that.
