High Availability for WSS Extranets

Asked By: Carolyn    Date: Apr 24    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 635

We have about a dozen WSS extranets on one web front end server in our DMZ. The provisioned databases for each are in a SQL Cluster. Each site has its own static IP address.

How do we go about providing High Availability [Automatic Failover] for these sites? I have read the paper “How to Configure Network Load Balancing for a Microsoft™ Office SharePoint™ Portal Server 2003 Implementation” by James Edelen. This paper, as good as it is, describes what you do for one portal (web site); how about Network Load Balancing for multiple sites? Do you just take this principle and extend it?

I am not an expert on this, by any means, but we have network  load balancing  configured on our medium size farm. We currently have 9 virtual servers running (or IIS Web sites) with 2 anonymous (non-SSL) and 7 SSL. Each virtual server  is IP bound with unique certs for each VS that is SSL enabled. So, it is possible to have high  availability for all your IIS Web sites.

Just take the principles and extend them. There really isn’t any magic here – just create a new NLB cluster  for each unique URL that you want to provide high  availability for.
