Hiding List Fields

Asked By: Tanya    Date: May 15    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1683

I was wondering if there is a way to hide List field/(s) from users
when adding items to the list. By default, sharepoint displays all of
the fields that the list has when adding a new item. Some of the
fields are calculated fields which I don't want the uses to see. Is
there anyway I can hide fields from users?

Not out of the box. As with every request, you could probably come up
with some kind of custom code solution.

You can 'remove' the fields  you dont want users  to see, using FP2003.

Will that unghost the page??????????????

You are correct..........that will un-ghost the page. I would just
use the, "out of the box", view settings to hide  the column/field.

This is under "Modified Shared Settings"........edit current view.

What if you do the following way :

1. Do what you want to list  using FrontPage. Save the list as a template and then re -ghost the page using ghost hunter web part.
2. Later create a new list with this new list template.

Saving a page in FrontPage will always unghost the page. However, you
can customize the list  Form Web Part (LFWP) on the page used to create
new list items  in FrontPage 2003 (just right click on the Web Part),
save the page (this will unghost it), and then reghost the page using
the GhostHunter Web Part. The changes that you make to the display of
the Web Part will be retained because they are saved as a property of
the Web Part, not in the page itself. Unfortunately, there is no other
alternative to customizing the LFWP in today's product.

Reghosted pages bleed thru as unghosted when using custom templates.

Why wouldn't you just modify the view (without Front Page)?

Again, you can always hide  or show fields  by choosing "Modify Shared
Web Part" and clicking on "Edit the current view" or you could go
into the the list  item and use the link on the left, "Modify settings
and columns". You could even create your own custom view and set it
as the default  view, as opposed to allitems.aspx.

Everything I suggested above can be done without Front Page and won't
unghost the page. Front Page should always be a last option!

I didn't intend to imply that I was opposed to creating/modifying list
views, the approach that you describe.

But I don't think that it will meet the needs of the original request:
"How do I hide list  field(s) when adding  items to the list"?

Unfortunately, the List Form Web Part (LFWP) on the NewForm.aspx doesn't
expose the Content property of the
xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WebPart/v2/ListForm" Namespace from
within the browser. The only way I'm aware of to edit this property is
within FrontPage.

My point was that an unghosted page will bleed thru as unghosted in a
custom template even if it is reghosted using the Maurice's Ghost Hunter
Web Part.

I didn't see that he said for "new items", I
thought I was just showing existing items  in a webpart. Yeah, that
is a hard one, hiding  fields when a user adds a list  item, I have had
problems with that myself in the past. Ended up creating a .NET form
that saved to the SharePoint list and stuck it in a page viewer web
part. Anyway, sorry for not reading that post better.
