How to hide options in SPS ?

We are planning to implement SPS in several phases and to start off with, we planned to launch with the Site directory (listing all WSS sites). Now we don’t want to have the other options like “Home”, “News”, & “Topics” to be visible on the home page, is there a way to hide all these options?
