Is this a list view? You'll probably have to customize the page with SPD to
do that.

If you are just dealing with a view  (within a list or document library), modify
the view and don't include the field  (uncheck it).

There are two ways, you can use the EditModePanel server tag in your template (
www.andrewconnell.com/.../5535.aspx ) or a simple
<div style='display:none'>

can you give more details in what you try to accomplish?

Simple - we do it all the time. Using SPD copy the form view  you are
interested in modifying, save it with a new name, make your changes, delete
fields, make read-only, save it, then make it the new default or leave as is.
Depends on how you want to use it (have users get at it).
