I was wondering if it is possible to use sharepoint for an helpdesk
application. (ticket tracking)

Use an Issues List. They assign unique Issue ID numbers to each issue created.

Please define "use."

It could be started from a web  page, certainly.
A dataview web part  could retrieve information from the application database and
display it in
different, customizable, views. Linked dataview web parts could give great
flexibilities in
presenting database information, but the operative word here would be "VIEW."

Dataview parts do not input information.

Infopath could easily be used to build a ticket  tracking process, depending upon
your definition of
"easily." My definition includes limited code writing.

Check out a post last week on which ID's are static in an issues list and which
change with each
update. Make certain you are tracking  on the static one.

if you a looking for a advanced native helpdesk solution for SharePoint 2010 then take a look for 3rd party solutions available on the market. Here is a good example to start from: www.harepoint.com/Products/HarePointHelpDesk/
