How to give Non AD Users to access portal/teamsites

Asked By: Maulik Kasana         Date: Nov 13, 2009      Category: Sharepoint      Views: 502

Following is the scenario:

I have Share point portal 2003/SP1 with WSS.

The problem:

I have a few users (Thankfully only 20) who for some reason do not have
Active Directory accounts but need to access our portal/team sites.

The obvious solution here may be to create user accounts locally on our
server machine (I am using a single pc installation) and add give them
access from there.

Can any1 guide me to a better solution or some fallbacks/pitfalls that I may
face in the long run in pursuing this solution or is there any other
solution also available.

Any articles / url's will be helpful

It really depends what you want them to be able to do. Read-only access
to portal  areas can be achieved by setting up Anonymous access  (though a
separate virtual server so that "normal" users  don't fall back to using
Anaonymous).

For team sites  you don't actually need a separate virtual server and you
can specify Anonymous rights at the list level.

All of the above is documented in the Admin Guides...

I am encountering this scenario  as well, except that we don't have AD here.

I have heard that there is SQL authentication that can be used, but nobody
has given me any feedback on how that is setup? Via sql security logins or
a table with users  logins and passwords.
