Getting 'Windows Media Player cannot connect to the server' on wmv

Asked By: Rohit    Date: Jan 06    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 2842

I have some wmv files in a library but when we are trying to play them
using WIndows Media Player higher than version 8, i get the following
error in 'Windows Media Player' right after i click on the file to open
the file:

"Windows Media Player cannot connect to the server. The server name
might not be correct, the server might not be available, or your proxy
settings might not be correct."

These videos were playing just fine but not sure what happenned. Now
they are not working. I can't seem to figure out what is going on?

Is there anything i need to configure or install on the server that
will allow these videos to be streamed? Or any other suggestions.

SharePoint isn't well suited for streaming video - you'll either need to
switch to having it download-and-play or store the stream on an actual
streaming server  and only store the link in SharePoint.

How can i set it in a way where the users will be forced to download
the video and when it is done downloading, it will then look for the
video player to play the video in? Please let me know.

I guess you could always zip up the video file  into a ZIP file.
That way, users definitely wouldn't be able to play the file directly
from the site. You'd then have to put instructions on the site as to
how to download and open it, though.
