Getting started

Asked By: Edmond Kidd         Date: Oct 28, 2006      Category: Sharepoint      Views: 159

I was involved with the original Sharepoint (STS) Beta which I didn’t fully understand back then and have since forgotten most of it. I have just started at this site where they are using Sharepoint 2003 but at its most basic level and administering it via the web interface. There is so much more that they could be doing and so much more value it could add to their operations.

I’m an MS Access specialist but I’ve been lurking here in the group for a month thinking I’d start to learn enough not to have to ask dumb questions. In reality almost everything I’ve seen and read has been over my head – mainly I think because the interface you guys must be using is unknown to me. So I would really appreciate some guidance to Sharepoint Principles 101 to at least get a grasp of the basic concepts.

First, welcome to the list.

Mindsharp does a free, one hour Introduction to SharePoint that you
would probably find invaluable:
https://www.mindsharp.com/Default.aspx%20DATES

WikiPedia doesn't say much about it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SharePoint

Unfortunately, one of the best beginner posts about WSS v2 is no longer
available (I can't even find it cached on Google):
ipattern.com/simpleblog/PermLink.aspx?entryId=38

Shameless plug: You could buy my Information Worker book (for $15, you
really can't go wrong):

There’s nothing worse than taking up list time with really basic stuff … self-learning sticks better anyhow so again thanks for the links and the really tedious questions when I start asking them
