Getting email set up on the server

I've been running a SharePoint site on my
corporate intranet for a while, but just took control
of a new site on the Internet. The site is on a very
basic Windows server. It is the only thing on the
server. I would like to have the site be able to send
email alerts and such things as notifications when I
add people to the site. However... I can't figure out
what to do to set it up. Do I have to open a port on
the firewall? I have activated the SMTP on the
server... I'm stuck as to what to do next and don't
even know how to describe the situation any better
than I have...

You will need port  25 open  on your firewall.

That's the SMTP port.

You may want to secure the box to only limit that box to use it for its SMTP
services. Check the relays as well.
