You can get the current logged  in user with the following method:

That only gives the user who is viewing the portal  page. Remember
the underlying framework of the portal is a web server  and web
servers are stateless. Connections between the browser and the
server are transitory in nature: the browser connects to request a
page and the server returns the page. There is mechanism to monitor
concurrent 'connected users' that I know of.

what if i want to see the list of currently logged  on
users on the portal. Is there a good way of getting
the list.

I think the question is how to find out all the logged  on users  at any given
time, this is actually a very interesting question.

The only way I can think how to do it is via the members web part (or custom
coded) and use Presence info - now that will tell you people are on a
network not necessarily that they are on WSS/SPS.

If anyone has any thoughts on this please share.

The closest thing I could come up with is a way of finding out if anyone has
posted any info to the site. Since that leaves a fingerprint on the site you
could programmatically retrieve  that and display it. So for example say you
had a 'user logged-in/logged-out list' web part that would be a way to work
around the issue. So you could log access to storage and retrieve that and
display it. May be an interesting thing to code up.
