To ellaborate a bit on my issue, i can search all sites including my
sites when i use the search facility within our Corporate Intranet (ie
when i am at the intranet home page) but when i enter My Site, i cannot
search anything anywhere, it just comes up with 'webpage cannot be
found error'

It cannot find the results.aspx page. Most likely, it is either pointed to the
wrong place in SSP props, or you do not have permission to see it. I also saw
this happen once when the page  was left in the check out status as well.

it is, by default, the first portal you created's (I think) search  center, like
portal.contoso.msft/.../Results.aspx

I just edited the 'preferred search  centre' in My Site
Settings to http://intranet/search/pages/Results.aspx and its all
sorted...but

i just noticed that i get the same 'webpage cannot be found' error
when i do a search and select 'this site' in the drop down menu, this
happens if i search in my site  or the corp intranet..
