Generating sitetemplate

I’m new to Sharepoint and have just created a site that I want to use as a template to be used elsewhere.

Is it possible to ‘script’ all the settings?

I don’t know what you mean by script all settings, but it is possible to save the site  as a template  and use it to create further sites.

Go to “Site settings”. Choose “Go to Site Administration”. You will find the option Save Site as Template under the section Management and Statistics
