Gaining Access to _Hidden columns

Asked By: Vanraj    Date: Apr 23    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 2034

We have an issue where we would like to make the "Version Comments" field
mandatory. After doing a lot of research, I have found that this column is one
of the mystical "_Hidden" columns. Is there a way to access these columns so
that I can change the settings on the "Version Comments" column to "required?"
I know not to tinker too much with these columns, but having some way to access
these columns, either by creating a view in SPD or whatever. All I want to do
is change the setting, and then hide the "_Hidden" columns again so that other
users can't mess anything up. (It would also be intersting to see what the
hidden columns actually are.) I have seen how to change the "Event" content
type from _Hidden to another group, but that doesn't do me any good. I also
know how to change the "Title" column settings, and what not to touch there.
Any help is appreciated.

Question for you on your last comment: How do you change  the Title column  and
what are you not supposed to touch there? I have this set to _Hidden in all my
Content types.

Sorry I can't provide any info on the _Hidden fields.

If you change  the name of the title  field here, then you change the name of
every title field. This could be problematic if you change your "Title" field
to something that only applies to one or two document libraries as this will
change is across your site collection. Changing it back isn't exactly easy
either, because if you do happen to change it, when you try to change it back it
will give you an error message saying that the name "Title" is reserved. There
is a workaround to this, but it is complicated. I don't recommend changing the
name of your "Title" field. It would probably be a better idea to create the
"Title" fields you need to use and then set the main "Title" field to "hidden."
Then it will not show up in your "upload" forms or "create new" forms. That's
just my advice though. I'm certain that others here could probably explain it
