Forefront and MOSS 2007

Asked By: Alexandria    Date: May 20    Category: MOSS    Views: 723

I'm using Symantec Enterprise for my environment (domain) and I was
just made aware that forefront has some features that also does some
scanning in the background. My question is it necessary to have this
on a MOSS install? Can I just use Symantec considering that I scan all
systems on a regular basis?

I believe that Forefront will provide some capabilities like Deep
content filtering for your environment that Symantec will not. In
addition, it allows you to scan using up to 5 engines at a time (already
builtin to the product and price). The deep content filtering allows
you detect content even if the file extension has been changed. For
example, someone uploads an .mp3 file as a .doc to get past your content
filtering. Forefront will catch it while SharePoint by itself will not.

You can use just Symantec if you wish as long as you do scan
your servers regularly. The advantage to using something like "Forefront for
SharePoint" is the fact that you can ensure that as items are uploaded or
downloaded from the SharePoint site they get scanned. I have worked on a few
projects where they have chosen to stick with their standard AV but then a
few have opted for the Forefront platform because they have an extranet that
they cannot guarantee the person uploading or downloading has the correct AV
and that it works. Your choice really, I am a great advocate of the
Forefront product, but be aware AV like this enabled within SharePoint does
take a hit to the performance.

I don't believe Symantec has an antivirus solution that integrates with
MOSS at this point (they do have one for SPS2003). The major difference
between Forefront and most other virus solutions is that they have an
integration to protect files stored inside MOSS. Most scanners only
handle things being stored on the file system, and MOSS stores all of
it's documents in SQL Server.
