Force update of a column upon checking

Asked By: Jeramy    Date: May 11    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 5938

I'm trying to force updates of a particular column upon checkin of a
document after editing it, in this case a REV column. It works great
if it is blank to begin with but since I have it as a required field,
but I want to force the editor to update this particular column upon
checkin. Any ideas?

You should be able to build an event receiver that will check the column
during checkin  and cancel the CheckIn if the REV column  hasn't changed.
The properties object passed as a parameter on the event has both a
before and after set of properties so you can easily compare the
columns. Setting the cancel property of the same object will prevent
the checkin from being committed to the database.

Right before I read your reply I found
the "easy" way that I was looking for. I simply went into the
Document Information Panel Settings for the document type and choose
the Show Always checkbox during open and save for this content type
and viola it showed the column(s) I needed to change. Using this
with approve and custom workflows is the answer I needed without
having to build event receivers.
