How to force a reinstall SPS Service Pack 2 (for SPS2003)?

I want to reinstall SP2 on our 2003 portal server (to see if it fixes
a portal alert problem we are having). When I run the .exe file I get
told that the update is already installed and is not necessary. The
alert service was using the incorrect virtual server when I first
applied the update and I think reapplying SP2 will help but I can't
find anyway to do this. Anyone know how?
