How to force a reinstall SPS Service Pack 2 (for SPS2003)?

Asked By: Jasmin    Date: Jan 30    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 3010

I want to reinstall SP2 on our 2003 portal server (to see if it fixes
a portal alert problem we are having). When I run the .exe file I get
told that the update is already installed and is not necessary. The
alert service was using the incorrect virtual server when I first
applied the update and I think reapplying SP2 will help but I can't
find anyway to do this. Anyone know how?

Have sorted my problem of how to reinstall  Service pack  2. Thanks to
Ronnie Guha for his post on this
(spsstuff.blogspot.com/.../...g-service-pack-2.html).

I could not get Ronnie's command to work originally but that was
because I was using the full .exe file. If you open a commmand line
and run the .exe file with the switches /T:c\:location /C then the
files are extracted to the specified folder. You can then run Ronnie's
command using the .msp file. That command is below.

msiexec /p [full path to the V2SP2Packlet.msp] REINSTALLMODE=VAMUS
/l*v c:\filename.log /qb!+

The easiest thing is to uninstall SP2 first if you can. Of course, you may
have deleted the necessary uninstall files to make room on your hard drive.

Another (more risky) option is to rename a directory that you know SP2
installed and run setup again. It should try to repair it, or perhaps make
your computer completely unusable
