Have I finally defeated myself?

Asked By: Katie    Date: Jan 03    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 858

Normally when I make mistakes I manage to rectify them eventually but
I think I have finally out-maneouuvered myself.

First the confession. I managed to delete myself from Active
Directory. There, I said it. A colleague later restored my from the
deleted users area of AD (who knew) but my access to WSS is now kaput.
I can access SPS content but as soon as I click to go into a WSS site
I get 'Cannot complete this action' and a blank screen.

I found a solution to this which is to go in as someone else and
delete myself from the 'View site collection user information' section
on the WSS sites. But I am the Administrator for all the collections
and so when I try to delete myself I get 'You cannot delete the owners
of a Web site collection' and when I promote a colleague to
administrator and then edit myself to remove admin access (as another
administrator) I get 'You cannot remove the owners from the list of
Web site collection administrators'. Any suggestions appreciated.

I think I need to find a new job over the holidays.

found  the solution  to this so thought I would post it in case anyone
is as dense as I was.

You cannot delete  your account from the site  collection owners  in WSS.
However, if you go to Central Administration there is a 'Manage site
collection owners' page where you can view  the owners for each WSS
site and replace or remove  any account (so long as you have promoted
another existing user  to be an administrator  for that site collection.
So I was able to replace my account as owner with a colleagues
account, then delete myself from the 'View site collection  user
information' page. My new 'restored' AD account is then recognised by
WSS since it is in the relevant groups with permission.

Found the answer in the online help, who'd have thougt to look there.
