Where the files are stored physically?

Asked By: Jordan    Date: Nov 26    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 41442

When we upload any files/pictures in a site, where those are getting
in the server. I mean, where the files are physically stored in a
server. I know, the files can be viewed as Web folder but I need to
know the physical location.

They're not stored  on the server  anywhere. They're stored inside of your
SQL database.

(And thanks for tossing an easy question my way...I'm glad I actually
found a question I can answer on this list. I have a long ways to go
myself in terms of understanding the beast that is Sharepoint.)

In terms of where in the SQL server, that would also be an easy question,
within the content databases. To dig a little deeper, unsure, never tried
to get to them in the blobs in which they reside.

Agree on this one, your subject line, not in the best taste.

The files  are stored  within the content databases. However, you can
access the files from Windows Explorer or another program if the
WebClient service is started on your computer. For example, if the
SharePoint files are located at http://testwebapp/sites/test/mypictures,
you can use \\testwebapp\sites\test\mypictures
<file:///\\testwebapp\sites\test\mypictures> to get to the pictures.
I'm not sure if this is what you are asking, but usually someone needing
location of files is trying to write a script or batch file to copy
files from one place to another.

Uploaded files  are stored  along with everything else in the SharePoint
Content Database for the site. There is no physical file location.

Sharepoint 2003 - Table name is Docs
MOSS2007 - TableName is AllDocs

Important fields include Path (you could build the URL using this),
and LeafName (FileName)

All files  in SharePoint are stored  in the database. Depending on how
the content databases are configured w/in SQL, the files you want are
probably in the content database for that site.

FYI, the files exist as a "blob" w/in the SQL table, not as an actual file.

That help?

So are the files duplicated ? I mean is sharepoint storing data in 2 places in SQL database as well as in file system?
