File count in WSS v2

Asked By: Sonya    Date: Jul 13    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1805

There are about 600 site collections setup in a WSS v2 environment in my
organization. Is there a easy way to get the count of all the files stored in
these site collections. Is the "docs" table under a content database the right
place to look? Also how do I get the total size of these files? When I mean
files, I mean all the possible contents that could be stored in a document
library or image library.

Querying directly against the database could cause problems if you're doing it
on a live active server.

I would recommend using the SharePoint OM to enumerate and count  things up.

I have some sample code here:
blogs.msdn.com/.../373271.aspx

It was for exporint files to the file  system, and is pretty outdated (I have
updated it a great deal since then), but might help if you need it.

It's also something I'll be updating on my new blog hopefully soon that will
work for both V2 and V3 (Just got to find the time:)), but I figured I'd share
in case you wanted it.

DeliverPoint will be able to give you some of this high-level reporting
information, such as total size of the site collection, total size of a
virtual server, how many lists are in the virtual server, etc...... But
it will not give you a total count  on the number of documents.
