Extranet Possibilities with MOSS

Asked By: Adrianna    Date: Dec 16    Category: MOSS    Views: 560

Can someone please give me some guidance?
I know that SharePoint security can make certain content available to
authenticated users while hiding that content to anonymous users.
The idea is that a Portal needs to be built that will have an intranet
and extranet.
Assuming that a Portal subsite will contain both types of content
(public for anonymous users and private for authenticated users), what
is the best way to accomplish this without sacrificing security?

This isn't particularly intuitive, but it does work. I had another
client with the same issue. To secure content  in a library or list from
anonymous user access, simply break inheritance of security  on the list
item. anonymous  access is handled at the Web site and List level in
SharePoint and doesn't extend to the list item level unless inherited.
So if the item has specific permissions it will NOT be available to
anonymous users  who can access the list or library. Just remember it
won't pick up permissions for regular users added to the library either
unless you re-inherit and re-break permission on the item again.

Review the Extranet Collaboration Toolkit for SharePoint that includes
the Deployment and Operations Guide. Basically, you would create a web
application first, then extend it and next create a site collection.
Follow the Deployment and Operations Guide step-by-step.
