External SPS Access Through ISA Server

Asked By: Vernon    Date: Jun 10    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1104

I have an SPS 2003 site (basic authentication) which is accessed from the internet. I have ISA Server 2000 in the path to handle SSL bridging. I used procedures from isaserver.org to configure this arrangement.

It works! Web pages appear properly. The search works. I can open PDF docs.

Except..... (You knew that was coming. ;-)

When I try to open a document from an Office 2003 app. I click on a link to a Word doc. Word opens, I see a dialog box showing a download attempt. It does not give any error, but, the document opens up empty.

If I go to this site internally (with basic authentication) directly, everything works well.

Is there something being filtered out by ISA (some obsure WebDAV function)? How is Office trying to communicate with a document in a SPS document library?

Sharepoint is not supported with SSL end point (bridging)

After reading the article, most of the points were not relevant to the situation I was in (at the moment). They would intrude in the future. (i.e. links sent via alert emails)

The ISA server  Web Publishing Link Translation feature works fairly well with standard web documents. However, Office 2003 uses WebDAV which seems to be a RPC like protocol. So, I am dealing with an application protocol within HTTP protocol. That, goes beyond ISA's capabilities to translate properly. The SSL bridging in this case breaks the function.

I enabled SSL encryption between ISA and the internal SPS server so I have SSL in-force from client to th SPS server. Office 2003 is now working much better!
