Exporting Users List to Excel

Asked By: Darren    Date: Mar 06    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 5777

I am sure this is a simple question that I just can't figure out but
here it goes. In almost all lists in SP I can use the Actions menu and
select Export to Spreadsheet. What I want to do is export a list of
the members of a site to excel. I have created a view with the data
that I need but there is no export to to spreadsheet. I only get email
users, call/message users and remove users from group. Is there a way
to enable the export to spreadsheet on this list of users? or is there
a creative way around this?

I just had to solve this problem. I took the approach of pulling the data
using an Excel (2007) web query rather than exporting  it from the SharePoint
end. This worked fine when the number of people was less than 100; for
groups larger than that, SharePoint insists on "paging" them in groups of
100, which makes the Excel Web Quwery approach awkward.

I wish that permission groups were actually SharePoint lists  which (e.g.)
could include custom columns, different views, etc. I have no idea why they
needed to be special-cased rather than use the powerful and flexible
mechanisms that SharePoint provides.

Did you try changing the display number in the default view  of the list
to see if that would change the paging? I think the default number is
100.

The point is that the permissions group  is NOT a "list" in the SharePoint
sense, so the GUI tools we have to craft (e.g.) views, columns, and other
settings for SharePoint lists  are not available. The "Detail" and "List"
views of permission groups are built-in and not editable (at least from the
web GUI; I haven't tried SharePoint Designer or hacking the .aspx page in
the "12 hive").
