Explorer view

Can someone clarify some confusions around the doc lib explorer view and/or
"open in window explore "option:

1) Does this functionality depend on webclient service at the server side?
Some post said so, but is not what I see from my server. In my server webclient
service is disabled and webDav is prohibited.

2) Does this functionality exist in WSS also? I only see it work in MOSS

SharePoint doesn't use IIS WebDAV, it has its own baked in. Your server  doesn't
need webclient, and in fact is probably insecure to turn it on.

...and it's available in both WSS and MOSS.

Client integration is turned off in FBA because it didn't function
correctly and Microsoft doesn't support it. Dave Mowers and I worked
together to debug this problem and managed to fix it. We now have an
ECTS.MSI file that get's used to implement the client integration
features including uploading multiple documents, using explorer  view and
the Edit in Microsoft Word/Excel/Powerpoint features you see for office
documents in the drop down menu next to the file name.

Known limitation of FBA - see the notes about client integration under
FBA at technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc288043.aspx

Explorer view  requires that your are logged in to SharePoint with a windows
identity. FBA users don't have a windows identity by default. This is one of
the Client Integration items that are normally turned off in SharePoint FBA.
