Experience w/ WebHost4Life

Asked By: Tracie    Date: Sep 26    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 888

I was re-reading what you posted back in September regarding
the "true cost of WSS" and your experience using WebHost4Life. I'm
now using them for my WSS 3.0 site, and I'm getting frustrated.

My recent frustration comes from the fact that they tell me search
won't work on my site and that they will need to move my site to a
new server in order to get search to work. In doing that, they say
they will need to start from scratch and I will lose all my work on
my current site. To me this seems outrageous and unacceptable, as I
would imagine there's a rather straightforward way for them to
backup my site and restore it on a new server (all content

If I were using WSS 2.0, I would backup a site using Frontpage
(since I don't have access to their server and cannot use STSADM) so
I could at least ask them to restore it in the new environment. It
doesn't seem possible w/ my 3.0 site, though. I can't tell if it's
because I can't use Frontpage for 3.0 backups or if WebHost4Life is
blocking my ability to do so.

At any rate, I'm going a little nuts w/ this, and since I know
you're an MVP as well as a fellow WH4L customer, I thought I'd ask
for your advice.

WSS 3 isn't so different from WSS 2 in this regard to Sharepoint
Designer is the new name for Frontpage, if you will, and does the same
thing with the same caveats and STSADM still works

Certainly I too would expect them to move  your site  and keep all the
content, if not then I think they should at least wipe your bill to date
for providing a non functioning site and you should consider whether
they are a god hoster.

Generally, I would suggest they've said this to you to cut their costs,
if you show them that you know what you're talking about they will
almost certainly move the site for you I would expect

They did the same thing to me but I refused to migrate it myself. I
was like you can use the stsadm  tool to do this. There is no reason
why I should have to do this. I further explained how to do it and
the guy wrote me back  and they did it. In his reply they began
asking me all kinds of questions about WSS. Apparently they have no
clue. They are running tons of single server  farms instead of one
large farm. I would assume they are doing this because then they
only have to pay for a server license. They then install sql
express and never have to pay for an enterprise license. The other
problem that they had was that they had like 10 application pools on
each front web server which I recommended that brought down
significantly. Heres my help desk correspondance

I read some of the posts and I feel your pain. One of the issues is the
servers these sites are running on. Another issue is the fact  that the
ApplicationPool they are running you sites under gets pegged and that will
cause the issues you are experiencing. I have been with WH4L for about 2
years and I have mixes reviews... its great when its up and responsive and
sucky when it dogs down (how was that for a technical dissertation) ... The
other issue I have with them is the advertised disk space.. I purchased a
plan with 2GB yet if I look in my disk usage on my site  it says I have
500MB. I queried the help desk and they said they don't offer this for WSS
sites. False Advertising? Maybe. probably.

I guess really it comes down to the price.. You get what you pay for and
they are the cheapest host I have come across. I will continue to use them
but I may also switch over to a fellow MVP that is now doing some hosting.
At least I know my site will have some stability with him.

Regarding the search  issue... that was quite comical. They told me 2 weeks
ago they would be moving servers and that they would be migrating my sites
yet it still hasn't happened and no word on when it will get done.....
another issue is the site  Statistics in the WH4L operations console.. Last
year it worked and I got some decent stats yet all of a sudden they tell me
it won't work  with WSS 3.0. It was previously. anyway a way around that
is to use SPD to pull up your stats... very effective.

I tried to help these guys but they seem to sink lower and lower.
