Excel Sheets used to populate data and graphs in sharepoint

Is there any way, or has anyone tried publishing a web part graph or
pivot table that is based upon a network or document library file. In
other words, If a user is updating a single Excel file and we want to
display the results in a web part, how would you do it?

I've tried a couple methods and have never been successful - Excel isn't a very
robust database

On the flip side, I have used Excel as a viewing vehicle for data  stored in a
SharePoint list, including creating graphs  and pivot tables using the Office web
parts. You might want to consider that approach...
