Excel Services in 2007

I am trying to add a new item to a KPI list that pulls data from a
2003 Excel workbook that is stored in a document library. I am getting
the following error when trying to set up the KPI item:

The file you selected cannot be opened because it is corrupt,
protected by Information Rights Management, or in a file format not
supported by Excel Services. Excel 2007 may be able to open this file.

Does this mean Excel Services only works with Excel 2007 workbooks?
Microsoft says that they are backwards compatible with 2003 - so this
error is confusing me.

Yes, Excel 2007 formats only. When did you hear that ECS is compatible with 2003?

Excel 2007 is backward compatible with 2003 – i.e. 2003 can open 2007 workbooks ONLY if you download and install a plugin

I don’t think excel services is backward compatible tho – indeed, I didn’t think you needed excel installed on the client to access excel services – I thought that was the point of excel services ?

Excel Services in MOSS only supports Excel 2007 workbooks.
