Event Dictionary and Support Task Matrix

Asked By: Norma    Date: May 13    Category: MOSS    Views: 849

One of the things our IT department does is monitor system logs and
designated text logs for performance issues and security threats.
They've got Win2k3 and SQL Server down pretty good but they don't know
what SharePoint events might show up in the system event log or the
application event log that might indicate a need to take a closer
look. They just add them to their "event dictionary" and, like magic,
we get daily reports of when these events are detected.

The other thing they are trying to do is hire a team to support a very
large MOSS operation and they want an index of all the things that this
team would do, essentially the list of Central Admin and SSP Admin
functions.

I really wanted to find someone else's work and plagerize it instead of
trying to create something from scratch. For example, I thought the
table of contents from Bill English's book might suffice for the
Support Tasks unless someone has a better idea.

I have this detailed in our upcoming book
(http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft(r)-Office-SharePoint(r)-Server-Practice
s/dp/0735625387)

But I can tell you how to get it for free

Load the trial version of Systems Center Operations Manager, load the
WSS and MOSS management packs. Open up authoring, and go to 'rules'.

In the rules section, the perf counters and eventIDs are listed. There
are over 150.
