Error when selecting "Edit in Microsoft Word"

Asked By: Bob Bolton         Date: Sep 07, 2006      Category: Sharepoint      Views: 306

I have two users who recently updated to IE 7. Now, all of a sudden,
they're having problems working with documents in SharePoint 2003. When
they select "Edit in Microsoft Word", an error pops up:

"Edit document" requires a windows sharepoint services compatible
application and Microsoft internet explorer 5.0 or greater.

I've seen the Microsoft KB article about this error message, but it has
no mention of IE 7, and none of the solutions worked for me anyway. Is
this a new problem? Anyone seen it before or know what to do?

What happens if you reinstall something from the Office 2003 CD? I
suspect that an ActiveX control installed with Office was updated  by IE7
and the old software doesn't understand that the new version is newer so
it is reporting that it isn't found. Sorry, I don't know specifically
what would cause this but I suspect that an uninstall/reinstall of
Office will fix it. Please don't kill the messanger.

I used to get the same error  when trying to upload contacts. To fix
it, uninstall Office and reinstall. Do NOT choose the Typical install
- choose the FULL install; this will fix the problem.

I successfully solved this problem by running Detect and Repair from
Word's help menu.
