Error Message: Windows Sharepoint Service-compatible application

Has anyone experience the following:Edit Document requires a Windows Sharepoint
Services-compatible application and MS IE 6.0 or greater. I am on IE8.0
What does this mean? I have a user who is working from home and when selecting
the document it gives the following errror messge above.
Please let me know if more information is needed.
