Email notifications and SMTP service

Asked By: Diamond    Date: Apr 02    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1027

I must be crazy or something, but I thought if you stopped/disabled the SMTP
service on a sharepoint server that it won't send out notifications. Is
this not true?

I have a server configured as a test system but has a restore from another
server. I stopped SMTP service and set it to Manual. It's not running.
But when I rebooted it, it still fired off a couple of notifications.

Is the only way to stop notifications following the instructions that others
have posted (a la spsfaq)?

It depends what SMTP server  is reference in the MMC admin tool for

So if you reference an external server  (which I do for security purposes --
I don't want to lock down yet another smtp  server), then it'll still fire
off notifications.

Yes, it will fire notifications  using the external server.
