Email groups

Does anyone know how to send email to groups? Something similiar
to 'Alert', but I need to send email for a whole group. Please tell me
if you have any solution.

I'm not sure how you would accomplish this as I believe that Alerts are
tied to users.

One way around it would be to create a mail enabled service type account
in AD like ListXYZalert@.... Next, create a distribution group
in AD called ListXYZusers@....

Then what you would do would be to edit the exchange properties of the
user object (domain\ListXYZalert) to forward it's mail to
ListXYZusers@.... Additionally, you can specify if the user
should also save a copy in its mailbox or just forward to the list

We do this by creating a mail-enabled security group  in the active
directory and putting all the people who need to receive the alert
as members of the group. We then register the group as the user to
receive alerts. This is a good solution, because SharePoint only
needs to generate one e-mail message, and the mail infrastructure
takes care of copying it to thousands of users.

We did have some issues getting this to work though:

* the group needs access rights on the list and to the items that
will generate alerts
* the group needs to have some level of read access at the (top)
site collection level as well, otherwise alerts will not reliably be

We made the group a member of the site collection visitors group,
which was also registered as the visitors group for the sub-site
where the list is.
