email enabled sharepoint group questions

what is this function supposed to do? I read it as: assigning an email
address to a group (test_members@...) would allow users
to send an email to that address and the email would go to all the AD
user accounts who are part of that group. Now this much works:

I assign an adddress, it creates a distribution group in the proper AD
OU with the correct name but it gives it the wrong address. Instead of
test_members@... it just calls it testmembers@....
My list/library contacts are all created without issue, with an email
address @sharepoint.abc.com and can be emailed no problem. But the
distro groups just show up in AD incorrectly for some reason (if you
look at the group in sharepoint it shows the @sharepoint address).
None of the users in that group get populated to the AD object and
adding users to the sharepoint group after the fact returns an
error: "The Directory Management Service has reported an error which
is not recognized by Windows SharePoint Services. "

AND When I email the group @sharepoint.abc.com an error is generated on
the MOSS server "alias uknown...". Am I missing something here in my
configuration or understanding of hwo this should work?

My app pool account has full delagation rights to the OU the groups are
created in and the DMS works otherwise flawlessly.
