I set up an email-enabled document library so that our front desk staff can send
all faxes we receive to our compliance department for review. The library is set
up to save the attachments (all PDFs) in the root folder and to only save the
attachment. The problem is that when the Compliance officer edits the file to
add a digital signature, the CREATED and CREATED BY fields are updated along
with the MODIFIED and MODIFIED BY fields.

I created a workflow as an audit trail that creates a new item in a custom list
whenever a new item is added to the library. Two new 'created' list items
appear; one when the library receives the attachment and one when the item is
edited. Why is the attachment not recognized as being created from the email? Is
there any way I can prevent the CREATED date from being updated?
