How to edit categories in v2?

Asked By: Jessica    Date: Nov 19    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 2024

V2 help gives the following directions for editing categories:

Click Site Settings on the title bar of the portal site and in the
Manage Portal Navigation and Structure section, click Manage categories.

- or -
Click Edit Page on the Actions pane and click Manage Portal Site on the
More Actions pane.

When I click Site Settings, I do not see a section called Manage Portal
Navigation and Structure nor do I see an option called Manage

When I click Edit Page, the Actions Pane does not show me an option
called Manage Portal Site.

Am I missing something? Are these instructions wrong?

It works for me. Make sure you're on the main site  and not a team site.
IE, if your site is http://server and you've made some team sites at
http://server/sites/it and http://server/sites/hr, the 'Site Settings'
link will give you different screens.

"Site settings" that they're talking about should be in the upper RIGHT
hand side and is a link to http://server/_layouts/1033/default.aspx

The link is called  "Manage portal  site structure" and it's in the second
section. It should link to http://server/_layouts/1033/CatMan.aspx --
you can tell from this URL that it's category management.

Then, when you get there, the page  is called Portal Site Map: Home (note
that Home is just a top-level category). I guess it's no wonder people
get confused.

Portal Site structure  = Categories = Portal Site Map.

Topics = old V1 Categories.

WSS = Web Storage System = Windows Sharepoint Services. [not]

Unlike the help  file, your instructions  were right on.

The help file mistakenly refers to the "Manage Portal Content" section
as the "Manage Portal Navigation and Structure" section.

It also mistakenly refers to the link for "Manage Portal Site Structure"
as "Manage categories"

I assume they will catch these errors by the time the final version is

Your explanation that "Portal Site Structure = categories  = Portal Site
Map" helped me out a lot!!

You also mentioned that Topics = old V1 Categories.

Where do I manage  Topics?

Topics are managed from that Site Map -- just click  the + sign next to
topics. What I meant by that is that I've seen some people refer to the
'use of Topics in V2' to be similar to the use of what V1 called

I'm still getting the grasp of all the terminology and concepts in V2.
I'm sure better docs, howto's, online webcasts, etc... will be

The only problem I have with the topics->categories view of the universe
is that you can have both. You can create a document/site/etc and put it
into a category but you can also put it into a topic. I'm somewhat
confused about the organziation here. Is there mulitple levels (i.e.
categories under topics) or are they on the same level and just
different ways to slice and dice your portal/site?

Am I correct that categories/topics can only be applied to document
libraries and not individual documents? If this is so, what other
methods are available to assign multiple categories  to a individual

This are some of my views which I came across while working on categories
correct me if I am wrong

Categories and topics can be assigned to any number of documents and vice
versa and also to individual items, this happens only when u r creating the
item but not when ur editing  an item since the item has been already been
assigned multiple categories  u can switch the categories of the item in that
category to another category this wont effect the item if it is also
assigned another category previously.

as far as the difference in topic and categories I see that topics is also a
part of category can say as sub category to category
I noticed this thing,
if we create a subcategory from home and assign the parent category as the
home then it becomes a subcategory and gets added to navigation, but if we
assign the division in topic category as the parent category then it becomes
subcategory to division and doesn't appear in navigation
even though if we had created the category from home.
the same thing applies if I create sub category from topics section, if I
assign parent category as home it appears in navigation  else it appears in
the topic section

the only thing I cant able to do was after creating a subcategory I am
unable to edit  that category, the default categories can be edited but not
the new ones created

categories can be assigned single categories but individual items can be
assigned multiple categories

another way of working with topics and categories  is that we can drag and
drop the categories or items from any category to any other category.
If the categroy is moved from topics category it becomes visible in the
navigation bar

but there seems to be some probelm still with editing  of newly created
category even after dragin it to other categories
i still get this error Enumerator is positioned before the first item or
after the last item.
can anyone put some point me in right direction what need to be done
