How to make a DWP globally accessible

Asked By: Jamie    Date: Jul 25    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1037

I don't have server access (I'm the intranet manager; non-IT), and I
asked my IT dept. to upload two web parts to our virtual server
gallery. They've never done this before and weren't sure how to do
it.

The one is "SubWebsOnTheQuickLaunch" and the other is one I
created using code I got in a class I took (javascript in a CEWP). I
can import these just fine to site collection WP galleries or to
individual pages, but I want all staff to be able to access these
easily and drag them onto any old page.

Can someone point me to step-by-step instructions for doing this?
I've found different things, but I'm not entirely sure I have all
the steps needed. I've read about "trust" and "assembly packages"
and the GAC...using stsadm commands... Can you tell I'm not in
IT? ;)

Please send me a link to this type of info if you know of something.
Is it as simple as adding the .dwp files to the \wpcatalog
subdirectory, or is that just one piece of a larger process?

Assuming WSS v2

1. Go to a page  that is hosting the Web Part you want in the Virtual
Server gallery.
2. Export it to the file system as a DWP
3. Have IT put the DWP into the wpcatalog directory of the Virtual
Server on each Web Server in the farm

That should do it.
