Drag and drop email from inside Outlook

Asked By: Madhavi    Date: Jan 26    Category: MOSS    Views: 1196

Our users know that we will soon be upgrading from SPS 2003 to MOSS
2007, and they are beginning to ask a lot of questions about new
capabilities that MOSS will bring. The main thing most of them are
interested in at the moment is whether they will be able to move
emails to Sharepoint libraries and folders that are visible in
Outlook, similar to public folders. Dragging and dropping into
Explorer views, or uploading MSG files is not easy enough for them.

From what I've been able to find out, this would be possible using
Outlook 2007 and Exchange 2007 with managed folders. The problem is,
we have no plans to upgrade from Office 2003 and Exchange 2003 anytime
soon.

Can someone please tell me if what they want is possible with a
combination MOSS with MSO 2003 and Exchange 2003? If not, we will be
forced to upgrade them sooner than we would like.

Before we do upgrade, I need to know...

1) Are Sharepoint managed folders automatically visible in Outlook, or
are they something the Exchange admin would have to create individually?

2) Are folders in the libraries visible as well?

3) What is the format of the messages when they are dropped in the
folders? .MSG?

4) Can Inbox folder structures be dragged into managed folders?

Thanks a lot. I need answers to their questions so I can get back to
planning the MOSS upgrade.

I wrote an extensive whitepaper on this a while back. See the Premium Content
area on www.mindsharp.com site. You'll need to log in but there are no
associated costs in accessing and downloading the paper - "E-mail Records
Management in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007". The content in my
whitepaper should also help you - yes, you will require Exchange 2007 but
managed folders will work with both Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007. The other
option is a 3rd party add-on by Colligo - works with Exchange 2003. I'd suggest
you compare the cost of licensing between deploying Exchange 2007 and purchasing
the Colligo product, along with other considerations around your business
requirements - other benefits of upgrading  to Exchange 2007 now as opposed to
purchasing an interim add-on - upgrade considerations, etc.

When considering outlook  add-in for moving item from Outlook to
SharePoint, I believe SharedLook
<www.paradisoft.com/outlook-to-sharepoint.asp> has a better
offering

SharedLook has only Outlook => SharedPoint, but it costs 25$ or less
per seat.

Colligo also has this ability, but don't know the costs.
