Does the Stock SharePoint V3.0 with MOSS do Roll-Ups?

Asked By: Darius    Date: Feb 10    Category: MOSS    Views: 945

I was told by somebody that the new V3.0 SharePoint with MOSS installed
could do Roll-Ups. I can not find how to do this.

I know that CorasWorks and Bamboo Solutions has a roll-up web part that
is supposed to be more powerful than what is in the new SharePoint.
That is assuming the new SharePoint HAS such a thing.

Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 or Office SharePoint Server 2007?
Office SharePoint Server 2007 has the content query webpart that can do
roll-up, but that webpart isn't in the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

We have WSS 3.0 and MOSS installed. I see the content Query webpart,
but I am not sure how to install it properly. It will not install in
the typical way to add web  parts to the page.

If you have an idea how to install and use it, I'd appreciate it. I
don't find  any writeups in the books I have.

You can also use a Data View Web Part to rollup content from multiple
sources with WSS or MOSS.

Yes, the Data View Web Part (DVWP) can only be created with SharePoint
Designer. If you're really, really, really good at XSLT I *think* you
can edit one in IE after it's been created. You can also create one and
export it then import it to the page you want it on. That keeps your
pages from getting uncustomized. I have seen directions on how to use a
DVWP to roll up content across site collections but I've never been able
to get it to work for me.

For the codesmiths in the group, my colleague Phil Wicklund has a blog
post that discusses the DVWP.

Alright, now you've got me curious. I've got a data view web  part
that I've created to pull together content from a wiki page library,
but I run into the problem of the data view not properly attaching to
new libraries if I create the original site as a template, then create
a new site off that template - if I understand it right, it's because
that data view web part  attaches to a list OID that's unique to only
the original site. If I export then import, would that solve the
issue and allow me to create a template off of the original site that
can then be reused without having to change the DVWP properties every

Yes, it can surface data from more than one site collection using XML
web services. No its not configurable outside of SharePoint Designer.

As I understand it, and saw demo'd, a true ROLL UP web  part will
allow you to view lists, and other content across the entire site
collection. And, I also saw it work across completely different site

I thought V3.0 with MOSS installed had at least a ROLL UP web part
that allowed you to view a list or sections different lists from
across that site collection.

I guess not. So, I am investigating, CorasWorks, and Bamboo's ROLL
UP web part.

DVWPs store the GUIDs for the lists they access. Because of that if you create
them, export then import them they have to go onto the same Site Collection.
You can change them to List names though, that might help you out. Here's a
blog post on how to make DVWPs more portable,
