How does instant messenging fit into the MOSS picture?

Asked By: Norma    Date: Aug 09    Category: MOSS    Views: 10066

We're finalizing our MOSS 07 purchase and yesterday someone brought up
the fact that their department would really love to be able to use
instant messenger. I know there are a variety of flavors of microsoft
IM, and I'm not entirely sure what components one needs for what.

With MOSS 07, what IM options are included? What do we need to purchase
separately (messaging services server?)

If your users' email addresses are the same as their IM address then their
presense will be shown in MOSS. If I go into a document library all the
documents that you modified last will have the presense ball next to them. You
can use OCS or MSN IM for this. You don't have to pay for anything.

OCS = Office Communications Server, right? I assume that's what we'd
need if we want secure (ie, internal) IM, rather than using the
wide-open MSN IM. Is that correct?

I'm trying to determine if MOSS, in and of itself, offers any IM
capabilities other than the presence balls.

While we may implement enterprise wide IM at some point, for now, the
main use seems to be within a few individual departments at the moment.

A bit of googling turned up some other options, such as this web part
(chatterbox):

www.codeplex.com/.../ProjectReleases.aspx

Are there other options  like that that would provide 'psuedo-IM' within
a sharepoint site itself?

On a side note, OCS is definitely not free. It runs somewhere in the
neighborhood of a couple K for the server  license and then you also have
CALs for your users. Great software (LCS '05 that is). OCS is pretty sweet
from tinkering with the beta.

Or if you have exchange you might be able to use that for your messaging
backend as well...

And yes, OCS = internal
