Documents and Listings

Asked By: Wayne    Date: Nov 16    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 576

My understanding is that when you associate a document with an area or
topic or site then you are creating a listing/pointer to the location of
that document. The document will live in the library of whatever area
you created it in and you can have as many listings as you want pointing
at that location.

In your scenario below you mention moving the document to another area.
Other than through Network Places I don't actually know how to do this.
The only way I see to physically move a document (in the web interface)
is to delete it from one library and add it to another.

Here are a few scenarios:

1. Add document. Add a few listings to it. Move the document to
another location with Network Places. Listings now give a 404 error.
2. Add document. Add a few listings to it. Delete the document.
Listings now give a 404 error.
3. Add document. Add a few listings to it. Download the document and
upload it to another library elsewhere on the site. Listings now give a
404 error.

So.....looks like we're without options on this issue. Seems to me that
if you delete an object with listings pointing to it the listings should
also be deleted, but this doesn't seem to be the case - I'd call this a
bug.
