Doc Libraries and My Network Places

Asked By: Mindy    Date: Jan 21    Category: MOSS    Views: 1044

We have many document libraries on our Sharepoint site. Users
ulitize "My Network Places" to access document libraries frequently.
This is a easier method for them to save to, move files around, etc.
We have however been experiencing some issues with using this
interface and was hoping someone might be able to shed some light on
why. We are on WSS 3.0 and Moss 2007.

1. Locked Documents. Frequently users will access a document, open
it and edit, etc and the document becomes "locked" so to speak on
Sharepoint. The file appears as a ~sdlfksjdf.tmp file of some sort,a
temp file. What seems to be happending is the users workstation is
locking the file and not releasing. After a period of time, the temp
file goes away.

2. Accessing through "My Network Places" Sharepoint folders will
become no longer visable. You can see the files at the root, but not
any folders below.

By default, SharePoint locks office files  for 10 minutes if a successful
close doesn't happen. I was told it was to prevent client crashes and
WAN issues. I do not know why you would be getting this often. Try
forcing checkout as this will not happen (should not) in when forcing
checkout, only when opening from URL. See

No idea on #2. Do you have any further info? Client type, version, etc?
