DNS alias

I just restored a deployment to a newer, faster SP server and am now
ready to redirect users to that new box. As of now we have two mirrored
SP boxes. We are trying to create a DNS alias so that visitors can
simply visit the "intranet" rather than having to type the actual
address of the machine/sp site. When we do the DNS work and make the
changes we get the following message:

An error occurred while accessing the dashboard. This error may be
caused by the proxy server settings for the dashboard. Contact your
server administrator. If you are a server administrator, configure the
proxy server settings by using the proxycfg utility. Consult the product
documentation and the readme for more information about configuring the
proxy server settings. Important: You must configure the proxy server
settings for the dashboard even if you are not using a proxy server. (1)

Object or data matching the name, range, or selection criteria was not
found within the scope of this operation.


We've set up the proxy server proper but still are having issues. Any

You need to use the extranet utility  in the resource kit to create  a new
cvirtual web server. Sharepoint only works with host headers and host
headers must match the machine name  (out of the box). Running the
extranet utility will allow to create a new virtual web server  (i.e.
