I feel like this should be so easy, so maybe I am overlooking the

What is the best way to view content from another site? ie- I have
documents stored in one site with associated metadata. I have several
subsites that need to view some the content based on the metadata.

I thought there would be an easy way to do this in 2007?

In MOSS 2007, you can use the Content By Query Web Part if the Publishing feature is activated. Good info on the CQWP (HS: J) on the ECM Team Blog (http://blogs.msdn.com/ecm), specifically the 4 posts about creating TylerButler.com & a post in October about customizing the CQWP.

A limitation of CQWP is that it only works within the current site
collection. If that is an issue, an alternative is to configure the
search results web part with a carefully constructed query based  on
metadata properties. This is more difficult to configure, but very
powerful. The results display  can be configured by applying xslt.

I had it all working within one site  collection and my next task was to try to get data from another site collection. You saved me some time!

My favorite part is the “carefully constructed query based  on
metadata properties”.

The guy who worked it out for us wrote a blog post on property
filters you can use with the web part: see

Why not just use a Data Form Web Part? It works across all sites within
a given Web Application. If it calls the Lists.asmx Web Service it can
even call across Web Applications.

Have you tried the Data Form Web Part? If you are in the same Web
Application this is very easy  to achieve.
